Sixty-four years ago, the leading minds of Greater Boston’s advertising scene sparked a tradition—one that would shine a spotlight on the very best creative talent in the industry. When it came time to name the event, they chose to honor a figure who embodied the spirit and values of The Advertising Club. The choice was clear and unanimous: Francis W. Hatch.
Francis—known to many as Frank—launched his remarkable 40-year career at the Boston office of Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn (which would later rise to global acclaim as BBDO). More than just a pioneer in advertising, he was a poet, playwright, songwriter, and storyteller who captured the world around him with a unique voice and enduring charm.
Beyond his professional brilliance, Frank was a humanitarian at heart. He dedicated himself to public service, giving generously of his time and talents to the Red Cross, the Red Feather, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and countless other causes. He believed deeply that advertising should do more than sell—it should serve. His passion left a lasting imprint, and that spirit of inspiration continues to ripple through our industry today. At a time when we crave inspiration more than ever, we’re thankful to still feel his influence.
Over the past six decades, The Hatch Awards have taken on many shapes—live judging, grand galas, wild nights at The House of Blues—but one thing has never changed: the phenomenal work born from this fiercely talented creative community.
Hatch is more than an award show. It’s where creatives gather, where glasses clink, and where we come together to celebrate, reflect, and revel in the industry we hold dear. And come 2025, we can’t wait to do it all again—with you.
